PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia 76ers team president Daryl Morey expressed optimism on Friday that reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid would return from a knee injury in time for a possible postseason run. “We're hopeful,” Morey said before the 76ers hosted the Atlanta Hawks and three days after Embiid underwent surgery on his left knee. The initial report from the 76ers said that Embiid would be “re-evaluated” in four weeks. Morey declined to describe the exact procedure that Embiid had, which would have provided a clue to the significance of the injury. “Our priority was to get a big, but we wanted to add to our playoff rotation this year,” Morey said.

The 76ers did not release any kind of timetable on Embiid's return. But there is no doubt, given the nature of the injury, that Embiid will miss a significant amount of time. He is the NBA’s leading scorer with 35.3 points per game and also is averaging 11.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists. He had a franchise-record 70 points to go along with 18 rebounds on Jan. 22 in a 133-124 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia 76ers guard Kelly Oubre Jr. has been hospitalized with undisclosed injuries after being struck by a vehicle Saturday, the team said. The 27-year-old Oubre is in stable condition and the team says he will miss a significant amount of playing time, but not the rest of the season. The Sixers said Oubre was walking near his residence in downtown Philadelphia when he struck. Oubre is in his first season with the 76ers and has averaged 16.8 points in the first eight games. He was the 15th overall pick of the 2015 draft and has played with four other teams.
